The Double-Dog Dare, Sweet Scary Nostalia

 My Dear Sillies,
A very talented and loving lady, Jenny Matlock, used to do a Saturday Centus exercise. I occasionally participated. This photo was the prompt. The challenge: using all five senses, write about this in 100 words max.
Here's my story, The Double Dog Dare...

“I double-dog dare ya to go in,” Johnny challenged. He was cute so I acted brave.

“Okay.” I swallowed my jelly bean whole. Salty black-licorice flavor stuck to my tongue.  Entering the creepy old shack, the smell of mud overtook me.  I was blinded by darkness.

“Welcome!” A boyish voice came up through the floors’ wooden panels.  I noticed a gaping hole at my feet and felt the sudden firm grip of fingers clasping my ankles from below.

“Let me go! Help! Help!”

A familiar giggle slowed my pulse.

“Johnny, you poo-poo head! That wasn’t funny!”

Wordplay, A Saturday Centus

I've been ditching class for too long. It's back-to-school time, so I re-entered Jenny Matlock's Saturday Centus.  She challenged us to write a sentence without the two most common letters of the English language, "e" or "t".

Jenny Matlock

Here's my humble offering: My mojo ran away.

Jenny's assignment also prompted this little rhyme:

Wordplay

There's "hop" in "hope" without the "e"

And "can" in "can't" minus the (apostrophe) "t"

Wordplay alone serves to attest:

Sometimes we manage more with less.

Be well, enjoy the weekend, and keep hopping.

Is it Nap Time Yet?

Wishing all good mommies a glorious nap this weekend!

{Originally posted for Saturday Centus on 5/14/11. The prompt was "Hush little baby, don't you cry."}

Is it Nap Time Yet?

Hush little baby
Don't you cry.
Life isn't easy
I'm not gonna lie.

But you've yet to taste chocolate
Or visit the zoo
Skip rocks 'cross a creek
And play peek-a-boo.

You haven't chased bubbles
Or wiggled your nose
Counted your fingers
Or tickled your toes.

And you've yet to eat ice-cream
Or dash through the park
Catch your first spider
And hide in the dark.

Right now, though, you stink
And you're all full of crap.
So let's get you changed
Then mom needs a nap.

Living the Dream

I’m living the dream, man.
But don’t get me wrong.
I work real hard
Dude pass me my bong.
I’m up before noon
Then act like a fool.
It’s a stretch for me, bro.
Do I look like a tool?
The babes aren’t too smart.
But they’re stacked like IHOP.
When I just wanna nap
They whine “Dontcha stop!”
The lights are too bright and shiny and stuff
At eight grand per show
This work’s way too much...
*Bleep* they send me to Rome
I don’t even speak Dutch!

Say, wanna puff?

Reality TV -
‘Nuff said. It’s real tough.

Losing it After 40: A Saturday Centus

Jenny Matlock's Saturday Centus sometimes (e.g., this week) challenges us to write a piece within 100 words. The prompt is bolded below. Consider joining the fun, if you haven't already. And please visit other centus posts here.

 Losing it After 40

The chair dominated the small room. I didn't see it until I walked into it, though. A peppy young Doctor giggled and patted the seat for me, indicating where to place my butt. She pushed a cold, binocular-like apparatus against my face.

"What letters do you see?" she asked.

Letters? Those fuzzy black spots? I pondered. Nervously, I made stuff up: "U, R, A, P, P,"..."Y, O, Y?"…“C, I, C!”

She shoved the apparatus aside and scrawled out a prescription. "You really need bifocals. It often happens after forty."

F, U, kid! I thought.
