Our horsturkey or turkorse is back: Sundays in My City

Thanks to hostess extraordinaire, UnknownMami, we're back for another glimpse of Chico, CA. To tour the world of bloggers' hometowns, visit her site here.

Unknown Mami
DuPont is ready for Thanksgiving. Let's hope his horsturkey/turkhorse disguise assures his immunity from becoming the main dish at a Thanksgiving meal.  [Oh, how dare I suggest that!? Sorry, DuPont.]
On an entirely different note, I had the pleasure of attending a Bar Mitzvah (the ceremony for a Jewish 13 year old) this weekend. Do you know what this beauty is called?
If you said a Torah, you're half right. It's a Torah cake. {Mazel Tov means congratulations and/or good luck.} The Torah typically consists of the Old Testament, each letter hand written by a calligrapher. This one consisted (I'm assuming it's gone by now, which is a safe assumption) of chocolate and creamy vanilla-y goodness.
I saw this quote on a magnet at a local bookstore. I've read it before, but it's always helpful to remember:
"Courage does not always roar.
Sometimes courage is the quiet voice
at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'"
-Mary Anne Radmacher

Thanks for visiting.

Have a good week and, when times are tough,
the courage to try again tomorrow.

  1. In movies and TV shows I have heard people say Mazel Tov for years! I had no idea how it was spelled. Google? Heck, I wasn't even sure it began with an "m." Anyway Mazel Tov to Dupont and all his people.

  2. That cake is impressive!
And I don't think Dupont is in danger of being eaten - he might be just a little tough.

  3. Sounds fun. I only know the Bar Mitzvah from the movies.

  4. DuPont's new outfit made me laugh out loud. It might make it swear off turkey this year though.

  5. I love this outfit, it's just crazy how quickly Halloween is coming around now as well, it won't be long now until it's over and the Christmas hype begins!

  6. that is quite the cake, and hmmm I think the horse would be rather embarrassed with that tail

  7. Poor DuPont! He looks embarrassed. But speaking of mashups, Thanksgivukkah is coming! It will be one for the ages!

  8. Yeamie and Debra, yes, Thanksgivukah is coming soon. Hanukah and Thanksgiving will not collide again for another 77,789 years.

    Thanks, all.
Be well and have a good week.

  9. I am not Jewish and haven't ever attended a Bar mitzvah (did I just spell that wrong???), but I have always wanted to go. I find Judaism fascinating. I hope you had a good time this weekend and that cake looks fantastic!!!

  11. I've been known to slip a Yiddish word or two into conversation from time to time! Love Dupont's newest outfit!

  12. Well, look at how handsome DuPont looks in his Thanksgiving getup. I've actually been to a Bar Mitzvah once...a very long time ago. Had a lot of fun there, and ate way too much. That is a very cool cake!

  13. Evidently Dupont is going to be racing in the Chico Turkey Sweepstakes.

Hope you had a good weekend.

  15. Poor Dupont! I hope no one stuff him! Do any liberal Jews have Bar Mitzmah's for their daughters, Robyn?

  16. That is the best Bat Mitzvah cake I have seen. Our girls had a joint ceremony in June and they had their photo on the cake (My aunt wanted it that way). They would have loved this one instead.

  17. GB, yes, I had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony. Maybe I'll re-post that snippet. I wrote it years ago. =)

Rhonda, I remember that cake. Your story about it was funny. I really liked the cake.

    Thanks, all.

  18. That Torah cake is pretty awesome. Also, this post reminds me that even though I just turned 30 I'm technically not yet a man. This is my way of desperately clinging to youth. Mazel tov indeed!

  19. DuPont looks quite festive! And that cake looks both pretty and tasty.

  20. Well, that settles it. The horse is a cross-dresser.

  22. We have a cement lion in our local park that's like Dupont. It gets painted all the time for all the holidays. For Halloween, he was Mikey, from Monsters, Inc.

Thanks, Robyn, for everything. You've been a wonderful source of support.

  23. The cake turned out very nice! I haven't heard that quote before, but I really like it. I'll have to remember it :)

  24. My grandson has a number of Jewish friends so he's getting invited to lots of Bar Mitzvah parties. I guess the families do it up right because he told his Catholic mom he wants to convert.

  25. Giggling at the horsturkey/turkhorse!

I've attended a Bat Mitzvah. I remember the Torah. The entire ceremony was truly impressive.

  26. LD, my friends at I were saying, at the reception, that the fabulous party was going to make all the non-Jewish kids want to convert.

    Be well, friends.

  27. That Turkhorse is going to give me nightmares! What the hell?
Reminds me of the MerLion I saw in Singapore a few months ago - another wtf? moment.. (look it up).

That's a great quote too - thanks for sharing..

  28. Oh that DuPont! He would be an asset to any city! that's a lot of work for a cake!

  29. I'm thinking I need to get a DuPont for my city. That cake looks amazing. AND well done. That's not easy to find lately. And that quote is one of my favorites. I absolutely love it.
