TikTok and Insta Fame, Rear Death Seat of a 1970s Station Wagon

Dear Sillies,

My young siblings and I garnered TikTok and Instagram fame. Yippee! Somehow a photo of us in the backseat of our Rebel station wagon, circa 1974, got grabbed for this fun video. You'll see us in the first group shot after the girl in the initial scene. You'll recognize me immediately, I'm certain. (I posted this picture years ago here, and it's on my Facebook sidebar.)

Were you lucky to have one of those rear facing back seats? It was my spot, and nobody argued. I'd have innocent fun there on long drives--holding up pictures of a cartoon man sweating, with the question "Are you hot?" I got a few chuckles. Those were the days. Am I right?

Be well, Sillies.

Hugs!

  1. We didn't have a rear-facing backseat in our station wagon. I used to sit back there and pretend I was taking the elevator down to the level below (and back up again).

  2. How fun! No, rear-facing seat would just mean I was car sick the whole time.

    1. Thanks, Debra. That's a great description. It does, and that's why it's gone viral (if over 100K likes is viral.?).

  4. Woo hoo. I've got to go watch the video!

Loved the third row seat spot. But my dad hated the station wagon and ditched it for a Grand Tourino. I was so mad. I wasn't even consulted!!!

    1. Yay. You can't miss me. Funny, I didn't know I look so much the same, nearly 50 years later. Thanks, friend.

  5. I'm not on TikTok, so I can't see the photo. I didn't know station wagons had rear-facing seats.

    1. Darnit. I didn't think you had to be on TikTok. Sorry. I get really confused on how to post these things, not sure if there's another way. Sorry, too, that you missed out on the rear end, backwards seat. It was exciting, Diane.

  6. How funny. Glad for your moment of fame. I lived through the no seat belt life and standing on the hump hanging over the front seat. No rear facing for me. I am a bit easy motion sick, so I never face backwards - cars, trains, etc. No Way!
    Have a good week!

    1. Oh, I loved it Joanne. I probably wouldn't like it as much now, though. Cheers, and stay well.

  8. Haha funny. A bit scary that they used your photo but I guess nothing is private on the net. How on earth did you come across it? btw it's a great photo. I remember seeing it years back. Looks like you had a great childhood.
    Peace xo

    1. It does look that way. There were wonderful aspects and years in that childhood - lots of darkness and pain too, especially in later years. So it goes.
And I know. I think that photo (which I posted here and on FB) were somehow picked up for stock photos and voila! Likely from here because I have approaching 1 M views. Scary too, yes. I'll NEVER run for politics. Love ya.

  9. I tried to find the video that showed kids being ejected through the rear window in a rear end collision. No luck.

    1. Oh, thank the Lord. Haha. I believe there were seatbelts back there...but I don't remember wearing one.

  10. That sure brings back memories. It was like being in your own little world. Waving to the truckers, getting them to blow their horns etc. Good times.
