Saturday Centus, Trick-or-Treaters of the Worst Kind

Jenny Matlock
Thanks to Jenny Matlock, we have a fun writing option each week. Jenny offers a prompt every Saturday. The challenge involves using this prompt in a piece that does not exceed 100 words. This week's prompt is bolded below. Enjoy, and may you have grateful trick-or-treaters or none at all!

TRICK-OR-TREATERS OF THE WORST KIND

“Trick or treat!” they shouted as the door opened.
“Smell my feet! Give me something good to eat!”
Beaming with embarrassment, they continued as rehearsed: “If you don’t, I don’t care. I’ll pull down my underwear.”

Jimmy grabbed the plastic pumpkin filled with treats.
“Lemme do it! My tearn!” Danielle shouted.

“Kids, remember to work together, just like we talked about.” Mom advised.
“O-tay,” Danielle agreed, pushing the pumpkin gently towards the guests, while Jimmy grasped its handle more tightly. The impatient trick-or-treaters snagged fistfuls of chocolate, running off with utter ingratitude.

“Grown-ups today!” Jimmy sneered, slapping his forehead in dismay.

  7. This was cute - grown ups indeed! I guess I'm with the majority here, anything for chocolate. Even singing goofy songs in public. And as anyone who knows me will attest, I can't carry a tune in a basket :) Kat

  10. Arrgh! I hate it when grown-ups trick-or-treat us! It's even worse than kids showing up without costumes. Loved your story as usual! Great job!

  11. Ah memories of Halloween. 40 odd years haven't dimmed them. But I bet things have changed since then. Trick or treat!!!

  12. There is just something about Halloween that brings out the greedy in kids.

  13. Haha, I can just picture little Jimmy slapping his forehead in dismay. Maybe he should have had a French name as well.

  17. Yes, anything for chocolate, my friends. You got it, and you got me. Then again, who has ever made someone smell their feet in order to receive chocolate?? (I won't go into the underwear thing, because this is a family blog. Most of the time.) Thanks for your comments! xoxo

  20. Yes, I do flick chocs from my nephew (or any one I know for that matter) when he is not looking. They had the perfect Halloween monster's excuse to be rude...love your play with words... ;)

  21. Still giggling at the whole "smell my feet" jingle......so glad I wasn't the only one who used to chant that little ditty! (Somehow it sounds so much funnier now that I'm older, too.....what's up with THAT?!)

  25. I can just see Jimmy slapping his forehead!
What a great image. As for the chocolate grabbing adults, well.......I want to hate the them, but I sure wish I had some of that chocolate. This story is well written and filled with images and memories of "Trick or Treat, Small My Feet!"

  27. What a sweet link and great visual to this weeks Saturday Centus.

After the last two scary ones I was really excited to read a 'smell my feet' type use of the prompt.

I think we've had those trick or treaters a time or two here at the house!

Thanks for linking. This was fun!
