Welcome, My Sillies! Together we'll uncover morsels of sweetness in the light and dark. You'll crave chocolate. I'm a naughty influence. {Note: I avoid Hershey's but partake in regular fixes of fair trade and organic varieties.} Please enjoy a ravenous sampling, and may you fast become addicted. Cheers to all things sweet. That, Dear Sillies, includes you.

Chocolate Beer: The Latest in Chocolate
I hate beer. But this one kept calling to me from the shelves of Trader Joe's and Raley's/Nob Hill Foods. I finally caved in and bought some Boatswain's Chocolate Stout. Then, I drank some. I ~hiccup~ have no regrets. It's really good! Don't just take my word for it. A friend, who we'll call Closet Al Coholic, says it's good too. I also asked a woman at the supermarket what she thought of it --she was pointing it out to her husband when I eyed this bottle. She gave it a "thumb's up." I'm sure she's a booze expert, as are most of my neighbors in California's far North. Thus, with three votes in its favor, you can't go wrong.
I'd describe Boatswain Chocolate Stout's taste as light, yeasty (i.e., it tastes like beer), refreshing and with a subtle tinge of dark chocolate. It's made with cocoa powder and contains 5.4% alcohol. This stuff's really good. I recommend it, even if you generally hate beer. I forget the cost, maybe $6 or so for a 6 ounce bottle.
In sum, Boatswain's Chocolate Stout is a treat and a novelty. I give it a 9 out of 10.
Cheers!
PS Don't drink and drive.

Whatever next! Chocolate beer, I'll have to look out for it over here!
ReplyDeleteSo you don't like beer but you like that stuff? It must be very good - or maybe you're just a chocolate junkie.
ReplyDeleteI hate beer too but i love chocolate so maybe I'll like this!
ReplyDeleteI tried chocolate ale at a beer festival over Easter - completely forgetting that I don't like real ale. As you'd expect, I didn't like it - but Hubby said it was very chocolatey.
ReplyDeleteI'd be willing to try it. Even at six bucks a bottle.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of it, but sounds good
ReplyDeleteI hardly ever drink anything but if I happen to be somewhere they have it or it's sold, I'll try it.
ReplyDeleteThat is pricey for a bottle of beer. I guess for some special occasion like I take a lady out who really loves chocolate...
Now there's a way to drink your dessert!
ReplyDeleteI don't like beer either but I do like a nice stout every once in a while. It's just smoother and fuller tasting than yucky beer. So maybe you'd enjoy stout even if there was no chocolate taste.
ReplyDeleteGet drunk and have a sweet time doing it.
ReplyDeleteI tried chocolate beer one time and it was absolutely horrible. I assumed that's why you don't see it often, because it's terrible. But if you say this one is particularly good, I may have to try it... well, assuming that Trader Joe's ever gets built here.
ReplyDeleteI bet our Trader Joe's carries it, I just can't drink it. However, right now they do have a blueberry beer that's to die for.
ReplyDeleteI haaaaaaate beer. Still not sure I could be enticed to try this, but if it's pure cocoa, I'm allergic anyway. :(
ReplyDeleteI hate beer. I doubt my love of chocolate will tempt me on this one.
ReplyDeleteBnB, I tried another chocolate beer years ago, and it wasn't so good. This one's a lot smoother.
ReplyDeleteDebra, you're probably right. It's a lot smoother than yucky beers. I didn't realize that's the difference between beer and stout.
Diane, blueberry beer sounds strange, but if you say it's good, I'd give it a try.
If any of you do try this, let me know. I didn't expect to like it. It is really light and has a good flavor, though.
I feel at home with all of you beer haters. I even respect you more because of it.
Cheers! Thanks for stopping by.

I have had Chocolate Wine before but never Chocolate Beer. I need to find some and get it for gifts for our kids.
ReplyDeleteI really don't like beer, but I'd give this a try out of curiosity!
ReplyDeleteHi Robyn,
ReplyDeleteOnce again, I so deserve bonus points for commenting at almost four in the morning, which is eight in the evening, your time. Yes, Robyn, I'm typing from the future. Pretty neat, huh?
I bet it would be fun to pour that chocolate beer over the rear of somebody's pants. I see some party tricks happening with that beer.
Your starstruck and exhausted fan,
Gary :) x
I don't like beer, either, and I don't think I'd like chocolate beer and more than the chocolate wine my daughter got me to try. YUK. Guess I'm a toughie: I like my chocolate straight up.
ReplyDeleteI don't drink alcohol, but if there was anything that could get a beer in my hands, lacing it with chocolate would do it!
ReplyDeleteChocolate? Beer? Now throw in a pub of naked women (or men for you ladies...or men who may be so inclined) and you have the perfect Trifecta.
ReplyDeleteI'm visiting Virginia Beach next week. A Trader Joes is in the shopping center across the street from where my father-in-law lives. Giddy up. Gonna go get me some alcoholic candy.
woah, can't really imagine how that would taste like
ReplyDeleteChocolate beer! Who knew! I don't drink but this is tempting. Thanks for the tip. I'll look for it the next time I'm at Trader Joe's (I love that place!).
ReplyDeleteChocolate beer? I gotta pass, not a beer drinker, so why ruin chocolate? Now chocolate wine is another story...
ReplyDeleteFor somebody who really doesn't like beer you gave it a really stellar review Robyn so it must be quite something special! Chocolate in beer seems quite fitting though, glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteI have a nasty condition called alcohol intolerance that keeps me from drinking but IF I could drink, I might give that a try. Isn't just about everything with chocolate in it good?
ReplyDeleteYes, Cheryl. Sorry for your intolerance. That's an intolerance I wouldn't be able to tolerate.
ReplyDeleteThanks, all.
Have a great, sweet weekend.
xoRobyn
I love beer but dont think I can do the chocolate! We have it here too -different brand - chocolate and vodka doesnt sound too bad either, if yr into that - which im not.
ReplyDeleteGo the beer!
=]
I would give it a try! I like some of the summery beers on occasion. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review! It is important to know about these things! ;)
oh how can you hate beer? As someone who likes beer I would be prepared to try the chocolate stuff at a push xo
ReplyDeleteYou had me at chocolate. Too bad I don't drink beer. But I'm sure going to tell my beer drinking friends about it! lol
ReplyDeleteMuhammed, Mark Zuckerberg is getting desperate for another few billion, huh? Well, I'm doubtful that your comment will bring you or him a penny. Feel free to send money to me anytime. You are not welcome to solicit at Life by Chocolate, though. I'd have emailed directly but you have no profile.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
I would try it, if someone bought me a bottle. $6 for 6oz. is a bit high for me. I've had a type of Sam Adams that has chocolate overtones and that was pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check this out next time I'm at TJ's. I'm also not a beer drinker, but you've never steered me wrong with your chocolate picks!
ReplyDeleteJulie
I love chocolate
ReplyDeleteI love beer
At six bucks a pop
I'll stay clear...
Chocolate beer? What will they think of next!! If I was a beer drinker, I would definitely give it a try.
