Memorial Day, A Child's Perspective

To follow is my annual Memorial Day post. Please excuse my recycling job. Sometimes, I said it better then than I could now. Oftentimes, I'm awaiting my next creative thought. So I dig into my archives.

I was a highly sensitive child, a diehard environmentalist and humanitarian (who failed to use a dictionary to check my spelling, completely naive to the fact that I'd publicize this "poem to think of" decades later).

Nephew Jeremy, age 1.5, July, 2008.

May it be a meaningful, peaceful and safe Memorial Day.

With gratitude and blessings to all who have served and will serve our country, and to their loved ones, for all time.

  1. It still works, regardless of the decade!

  2. I like the poem.
I went past the town cemetery and it is always so nice to see all the flags to honor the vets.

  3. How wonderful that you cared about animals as well as humans. You deserved to have a tree planted in your honour. And maybe a tree-house built in it as well.

  4. I love the poem Robyn, honestly you seem like you were such a thoughtful and caring child. It's great to learn more about Memorial Day too.

  5. Wonderful, sensitive poem. We have to hold all those who have suffered from war in our hearts...human and animal.

  6. I think your child’s perspective/words/poem express what’s important about the day better than any adult could – or does.
In Canada, we observe this day on November 11th – “Remembrance Day.”

And that photo of Jeremy with the flag is precious. :)

  7. Thanks, dear friends. So many just bbq and party today/this weekend, without a thought of what it's all about.

GB there's a tree in Israel with my name on it - one of millions, I'm guessing. But it's there (if someone's watering it) =) and I'm proud. Thanks.

Beth, that's our Veteran's Day. We have two separate holidays; I was never quite clear on the difference.

  9. And the red sun setting over the two little "boobie" hills was a nice touch too.

  10. The sentiment is still very meaningful!

  11. It is sad! Wish we could just all get along!

  13. See? You were born to write! It's a good message still...

  14. Thanks, Pat. I appreciate it.

Keetha, LOL. It looks more like a rear-end to me, but we can stick with "boobie" hills.

Alex, thank you. I agree, except my line about the need to build more forests.

Beth, me too. It shouldn't be so hard.

Chuck, I appreciate it. I hope you had a nice Memorial day too.

Pat, thanks so much. It's nice to hear (read).

  16. Robyn,

Memorial Day aka Decoration Day is to honor those who gave their life in service and Veteran's Day aka Armistice Day is to honor all who served. Thank you for the poem.

  17. At that age you were concerned with things on a level that most of us didn't truly show compassion for until years later. Bravo.

  18. This is really a wonderful poem that still holds true today! You were a very bright little girl, and I can tell that your adorable nephew is just as spirited. Julie
