The Latest in Chocolate: Chocolate Covered Potato Chips

Introducing Trader Joe's Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips, the ideal combo for all who love both sweet and savory snacks. The flavors of potato chip and chocolate are distinctly good in this one. I inhaled these babies like I hadn't eaten in minutes. But my ravenous frenzy wasn't without a glitch. These chips had a somewhat funky taste. I don't know how to describe it except to say they tasted plastic-y. Upon scrutiny of the label, I find they were processed with alkali. Alkali is, apparently, the salt of a metal. Doesn't sound good, right? But baking soda is an alkali. Alkali is commonly used with chocolate to reduce bitterness and create a uniform dark color. I can't help but wonder, though, if said alkali is what created a strange taste.

Has anyone tried these? What did you think? If you haven't but are willing to, please eat some and get back to me. I'd like others' opinions. It's probably my ever-picky taste buds. Then again, as I peruse the label, maybe it's the soy lecithin - which doesn't sound too appetizing either.

Still, I didn't get sick. I'm just a bit perplexed. These ARE good. Trader Joe's IS great, and the package boasts "no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives." I can't ignore the funk, though, so I give Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips a 7.

  1. Here is how I eat snacks. Salt, sweet, salt, sweet, back and forth, back and forth. I love the difference between the two in rapid order. I am most certainly going to try these as soon as I see a Trader Joes. Right now, there isn't one withing 40 miles (we're still on the mountain for about 2 more weeks). Can't wait to eat them and to report back!

  2. You turned me on to chocolate edamame from Trader Joes so I'll certainly give these a try.

  3. Interesting combination, but it sounds as if the chips lost their crispness. Did you know "potato chips" were called "crisps" in the UK?

  4. Haven't heard of these before, but would sure give them a try. I love chocolate covered pretzels.

(If there's a Trader Joe's in my area, I've never seen it)

  5. We don't have Trader Joes here yet, but it is rumored Boulder might get one this year (a good hours drive from me) so I won't be trying funky chips...however, I must say you caught my attention and I would try them if they were available!

  6. GB, there were still very crisp. I think that's because they were drowned in alkali or lecithin. ?

Thanks, all. I'm sorry you're not near a Trader Joe's. I'd hate not having one nearby.

  7. Hmm. I have never tried them! But, I do know I love chocolate covered pretzels. So, I'm wondering, are they similar?

  8. Somehow chips and chocolate just doesn't seem to mix for me. They should be ate together and not one in the same, as my tastebuds they could mame.

  9. I have to say that I like the idea of chocolate covered potato chips very much, but I would prefer dark chocolate. Milk chocolate doesn't do it for me, so much. But dark chocolate covered pretzels are yummy, so why not chips??

  11. Sounds way too addicting for me to try. Sadly there is a Trader Joes where I am in Ohio but none anywhere near me in Texas so I doubt I will have any before I leave so there is no chance of withdrawl when I get home.

  13. Hmm Robyn. I really can't figure out if I'd like these or not. I mean I love crisps and I love chocolate but something holds me back from wanting them too much and it's possibly the same reason you were dubious too. There's just something about the combination of sweet and savoury I'm not keen on. I once had chocolate covered salty pretzels in America and hated them. I'd definitely be willing to try these at some point though!

  14. Track down some Ben&Jerry's "Late Night Snack". It's vanilla ice cream with fudge-covered potato chips and a salty-caramel swirl inside...and it's the best ice cream EVER. (Well, excepting Coffee Haagen-Dasz, which is heaven in a pint.)

  17. Love "I inhaled these babies like I hadn't eaten in minutes!" One of the best things about TJ's is that they'll open packages to let you sample new products. Just ask them next time to make sure you like it. Julie

  18. Trader Joes is fantastic. I think I'll find me some of these, but I can't believe they wouldn't be great. No matter what, alkali on chips has to be much better than urea on heel creme.
On the other hand, I don't eat heel creme.

  19. Hey there Robyn :) I have missed you!
Ya know I have been meaning to go to Trader Joes for awhile now! It is about an hour away tho' :(
I will def. have to try the chocolate potato chips!
Hope all is well in your world!
    Much love

  20. I saw that Ben and Jerry's has an ice cream with chocolate covered potato chip clusters, too. The idea of salty and sweet makes me drool--nothing better than a dark chocolate caramel finished with sea salt. I'll have to give these a whirl with the ice cream.

  21. Thanks, friends. Thanks for the ice-cream recommendation, Kelly and Julie. I must track that down for some taste-testing. I like the sweet-salty combo, but minus any alkali, lecithin or plastic flavor. At any rate, enjoy good chocolate with or without sodium.
