Are you a fan of The Hunger Games? Me neither. I recently learned that they have a line of chocolate, though. Naturally, I had to try it (for your edification). This one is a Hunger Games' CATCHING FIRE Beef Jerky and Smoked Mesquite milk chocolate bar. I found it, along with five-ish other flavors, at Safeway. It cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $4. But that's not all. It comes with a year's worth of free chocolate if you win their sweepstakes.
Plus, as I was eating this baby, I was smiling. I don't like beef jerkey, but I liked it in this chocolate bar. They did well to combine a smokey, salty, slightly beefy taste with smooth milk chocolate. It's not overly anything. I was happily impressed.
My only problem was a lingering unsettling sweet after-taste. Overall, though, I give this Catching Fire bar a 7.5.
I am not being compensated in any manner for this review. If I was, I would not have been so honest.
Cheers, and have a sweet day.
Welcome, My Sillies! Together we'll uncover morsels of sweetness in the light and dark. You'll crave chocolate. I'm a naughty influence. {Note: I avoid Hershey's but partake in regular fixes of fair trade and organic varieties.} Please enjoy a ravenous sampling, and may you fast become addicted. Cheers to all things sweet. That, Dear Sillies, includes you.

So you didn't win the years supply? Hmph to that. Beef Jerky taste though, hmmm
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of the Hunger Games but I AM a fan of both beef jerky and chocolate, so I may have to try this, if even just for the novelty. Safeway is my grocery store of choice, so... I'll be on the lookout.
ReplyDeleteSmokey, salty, sweet. Unusual mix. I bet it was a lot better than the movie though!
ReplyDeleteIt is good to know there are experiments in food still happening. And equally good to know there are people willing to try them. Not me! Thanks Robyn for being a taste tester for those of us who are tastefully challenged.
ReplyDeleteI'll pass. I'm not big on blends in foods. I like my sweets sweet, and so on. Just make it straight dark chocolate and I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for doing all this research for us. . .
Beef jerkey and chocolate combined? Oh, I think I will pass on this one ;^/
ReplyDeleteI doubt I'd go out of my way to buy this but if someone gave me some I'd definitely try it. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what the hunger games are. Not sure I'd try this though...I only like Tillamook brand jerky and I can't get that on the east coast.
ReplyDeleteI love the Hunger Games. I saw these bars at Walgreens not too long ago, but passed. Beef jerky chocolate just didn't sound too appealing.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen these. I'm having a difficult time imagining beef jerky combined with chocolate. I'm glad you're brave enough to try it for all of us! :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could eat that. Not a fan of beef jerky. Even chocolate couldn't help.
ReplyDeleteBeef jerky and chocolate sound so odd, I was sure you must be putting us on -- and we know you love to do that! But I kept scrolling up to the top, and that cover looks darn authentic to me. Dang! What's going on in chocolate land?
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I'd be brave enough to try that combination. I did think of you when I sampled a chocolate covered pretzel bite that had bacon in it. I only tried it, because you recommended something similar, and you were right as usual.
ReplyDeleteJulie
Beef jerky mixed with chocolate? I love science.
ReplyDeleteBeef jerky in chocolate? Whatever will they think of next. I won't try it because I'm a vegetarian. I'd rather have fruit in my chocolate. Raisins, oranges and bananas are what I want.
ReplyDeleteMeat and chocolate are something I really don't want to try.
ReplyDeleteWe have no Safeways here either.
No Golden Ticket? We can't have that!
ReplyDeleteActually, I love sweet and salty...something about the mix. Perhaps it's the contrasting flavor-flaves. I feel so fly when I eat it.
Thanks for testing. Hmmm...four dollah. Don't know about that. Four dollah is a lot of cheddah.
Hope you had a wonderful Festival of Lights. I'm outties until Jan. 8th. :)

No golden ticket in mine, darnit.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments, all. Have a sweet and safe Friday and weekend.
xoRobyn
I love a woman who loves chocolate. Let's run away together. We could cross the US in search of chocolate and then write a book about our adventures! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI'm in, Julie. I haven't had such an enticing offer in...well, I've never had one. Cheers. xo
ReplyDeleteNot a big chocolate fan, but that is hilarious that there is a Hunger Games chocolate bar!!
ReplyDeleteWhat's next? A series of movies based on a best-selling book... ha!
Oh...
A strange mix!
ReplyDeleteSalty? Ok, I won't go there...lol
Could this give hot chocolate a new meaning?
ReplyDeleteA year's supply winning might not get me grinning. Did you know that Safeway in Britain was purchase by Morrisons? Yep, I'm full of fascinating info, or something....
Have a sweet rest of your weekend, Robyn.
Gary :) x
What an unusual combination. I'd be willing to taste it but it doensn't sound like something I would enjoy. I like my milk chocolate straight up.
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine beef jerky chocolate. I know you like it, but I am not sure I wouldn't spend my $4 for a guaranteed good time - dark chocolate :)
ReplyDeleteSince it's a Hunger Games candy bar, most people die after eating it. Congratulations. You're one of the lucky ones.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan at all of the book, but jerky and chocolate together sounds like a good thing.
ReplyDeletewooow...I just knew that they have one! I dunno...beef jerky and chocolate? should try one myself..
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly that sounds pretty good. I wonder if I can find it out here in the boonies...
