Chocolate Stout Cheese and Progressive California

Dear Friends,

I hope August is treating you well. It's not my favorite month, and I'm sorry I haven't been around much. I'm working on a little book for ya, but technical challenges have had their way with me. I didn't enjoy it either. Don't you hate that? It could be much worse, though; in fact, it'll be fine. I'll share more about Celibacy and Suburbia in the coming days and weeks. Stay tuned.

For now, I had to sample Rogue Creamery Chocolate Stout Cheese . . . for you.

Pretty label, and the cheese is a white block -- nothing fancy. It was expensive, $10.99 for 8 ounces. I splurged, because it shouted at me to make the purchase. As you can see it's made with actual chocolate stout.

How is it? Meh. I mean, it's better than those cheap zippy packed cheeses. It does taste rich and high end -- like a mix of cheddar and swiss. I could taste the stout, especially in the after taste. But what about chocolate? I ate the whole thing in search of chocolate. I couldn't taste it. So I had to run out for a hot fudge sundae. I had to. Otherwise, why bother eating all that chocolate cheese. Right? Makes sense to me.

In summary, don't buy Rogue Creamery's Chocolate Stout Cheese, unless you have a strong craving for stout cheese. In that case, spill some beer on a slice of cheddar. It's cheaper. I give the cheese a 3 on a 1-10 scale.  It's not terrible. It's just terribly mis-labeled and missing chocolate.

On an entirely different note, I'm so proud of my progressive, open-minded, liberal state of California. Look, we even have Trans parking spaces! Wait, maybe that means "Transportation." But isn't everything that requires a parking space, a form of transportation?

Is the world getting weirder and less logical? Maybe it's just me.

Take care, my sillies.

Noted. Just pour beer on my cheese.

    1. Yes, Alex. Not too much beer, just a drop or two.
Thanks for affirming that the world is getting weirder.

  3. Ohhh I do love me some good strong cheese. Too bad it didnt have any hints of good strong chocolate! A new book- woohoo!!
So excited. California IS pretty liberal. I wouldnt be surprised at all. Have a great week. Sorry you're not a fan of August. Honestly, its scorching hot in Dallas so its not my fave right now either.

    1. Lots of yucky anniversaries, plus yucky weather, for me at this time. Thank you, Holli.
      Stay cool, kind lady.

  4. Is chocolate stout named that because it has a chocolate flavour or because it is dark-coloured like chocolate? I don't know enough about beer to know. But if it's the latter, then case closed about why the cheese was meh.

    1. It presumably has a chocolate flavor, Deb (not that I know anything about beer either). I've had some decent chocolate stout, some lousy. This cheese has "chocolate flavor" as an ingredient, but I'm not sure what that means.

  5. Weirder indeed it sure is getting.

Sounds rather steep. Your beer idea is a better one.

  6. Maybe making a cheese with chocolate as a main ingredient has issues, but maybe there is a marketing opportunity there. I'll be near Wisconsin in a few weeks and I can run the idea past a few cheesemakers.

    1. See if they've tried some combo. Trader Joe's has a really good one, actually. They put it out around Valentine's Day, Jono.

  7. I don't like the taste of stout beers so that wouldn't work for me anyway.

Love your picture and comments...very funny. Yes, one never knows how progressive a parking spot can become. Trans parking spaces could be a thing.

    1. And perhaps they should be a thing.

I don't like stout either, but it tasted subtle and alright in the cheese.

      Be well, Cheryl.

  8. the world is weirder and it's wrong to have chocolate on a label as a tease. Thanks for the warning and also for the chuckle - good pic and observation. All we can do is shake our heads and share the laugh. !

    1. I know, Joanne. I need to rid the world of chocolate on labels wherein chocolate cannot be tasted. SMH.

  11. Stout cheese just doesn't appeal to me and I doubt, if I were to eat it, my hubby would appreciate the odor around 3 am when i am blissfully asleep. I just need chocolate...not my hips mind you but they always have a softer voice than my need for the chocolate. Now if you are having a tough month, i shall tell you about a nice dessert called an Eis-Kaffee. Need a tall type of glass that a sundae would be in. Place a sppon of sugar at the bottom of the glass. Pour about 1/4 to a 1/3 of cold coffee into the glass. Put 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream in. Whip up whipping cream until stiff peaks form (add a little sugar..maybe 4-5 teaspoons just for a little sweetness into the whipping cream before you whip it). place some whipping cream on top of the ice cream sprinkle with chocolate shavings and add a think round chocolate wafer and a long spoon...enjoy!

    1. Woo! I almost got really excited (if you know what I mean, Birgit) reading that recipe. Thank you! Mmm mmm, and all that whipped cream too. Sounds better than anything Starbucks has on the menu.

  13. Chocolate Stout Cheese--well, those are things I never would have thought to combine. I'm glad a hot fudge sundae was not too far away to come to your rescue!

  15. Is there such a thing as a transsexual vehicle, Robyn? I could well believe it in California. A hybrid engine inside pick-up truck, maybe. I'm surprised you like stout. Is it possible you have Irish blood?

    ReplyDelete

    1. If there is, GB, it's likely in CA. I imagine it would be like a pink hybrid inside a huge Mac truck with wide girth. Nice insight, GB. I don't really like stout, but it tasted good in the cheese. As far as being part Irish, I'd get lucky more often (than once a decade or so) if I was.

Beer? Bleah. Chocolate and cheese are another thing entirely. Preferably separate.

  18. Stout beer cheese? Yuck. I do love cheese but I don't think I'd like that, esp. the after taste. August isn't my fave month either. I'm so lethargic these days.

  19. The world has to keep changing or we'd be stuck in stagnation. Yeah I'll just stick to my regular cheese thank you very much.

  20. Yea - a new book in the works! Sound way better than even GOOD chocolate stout cheese. I do love how you string words together. Hope the remainder of August is good to you.

  22. I like Guinness Extra Stout with good crumbly cheese. Medically, each is antidote to the other. However, chocolate is best ingested between shots of espresso. Not all the above ingredients agree with each others company but sometimes they're just all on the table at once. I can neither explain nor resist it. Please advise.

    1. I'm afraid I'm not in a position to advise regarding resistance of food/drink, Geo. I don't resist. I indulge. That's my advice. Keep indulging. And enjoy every bit of it all.

  23. Hi Robyn! I'm glad this story had a happy ending, and you got a hot fudge sundae out of it! The nerve of that stout cheese company saying it was made with chocolate. Funny about the parking! I can't wait to hear more about your new book!

  26. I'll pass on Chocolate Stout Cheese. I like to keep those two things separate.

Oooh, another book? Color me curious...hmm, what color is that I wonder?

And BTW, you crazy Cali gal, thank you for buying my book AND for reviewing it. BIG appreciation! Love you so much!

  27. Hey Robyn,

Yep, I'll pass or pass out on that cheese you've highlighted. It's almost up there with that British classic cheese named, "Stinking Bishop"!

Gotta' love liberal California. Now I shall head on down the Trans-Canada highway, eh! :)

Have a lovely weekend, my adorable friend.
