Chocolate-Covered Maple Smoked Bacon Soda & Maple Bacon Taffy

Whenever I enter my favorite local store, Powell's candies --which also serves wonderful gelato -- I give myself this speech: "You can look. That's all. Do not buy anything."
So when I saw this the other day, I grabbed it and took it to the cashier. "Darn you for always having something I can't resist," I told the distinguished looking older man with white hair and a playful smile.
"Let's see. What is this?" he asked.
"It's a pretty label that says Chocolate-Covered Maple Smoked Bacon Soda. I'm a blogger. My blog is called Life by Chocolate and I'm pretty sure my readers will be curious about it. Do you know if it's good?"
"Nobody's tried it yet. I can open it for you now," he offered.
I agreed. I sipped..."Mm, I like it," I sounded somewhat neutral. "It's sweet and smooth. It tastes like cream soda. And I taste the maple syrup. But-" I sipped again. "I have to fight to taste the bacon. It's in the aftertaste a bit."
"Wait right there," he said. The man dashed away and returned with a piece of taffy. "Here, try this."
I love taffy. This piece was mostly pink, with some brown and other light colors.
"It's similar to the soda, syrup and bacon. I think you'll like it."
I unwrapped it, while he attended to other customers. Soon, a sweet but smokey bacon flavor delighted my system. "Wow, I really taste the bacon," I told him, as the other customers brushed by me. "It's REALLY good. Thank you!"

If you come across bacon-maple-syrup flavored taffy, I highly recommend it. I'm not sure where you can find it besides Powell's. Sorry.
As far as Real Soda's Chocolate-Covered Maple Smoked Bacon Soda, I recommend it for the novelty factor and its sweet, smooth taste, but not if you're craving bacon. I'll give it a 7 on a 1-10 scale, 10 being phenomenally good.

Be well, and I hope the new week goes down smoothly for you.

  1. hmmm-not sure if i can get over bacon and chocolate together. I mean Chocolate is a gift from the gods but not with meat in my mind. I just feel like there are martians watching me want to eat all this together because they want me in their cookbook...as a main course:)

  2. Not sure I'd be crazy about the drink, but I will watch for the taffy.

  4. You had me until you mentioned Cream Soda. That's one of the few things I can't consume. I've had it three times and got violently sick afterwards. Of course my college roommate was addicted to the stuff.

  5. As much as I like bacon, and as much as I like chocolate, I say a bug no thanks to the two of them together :)

  6. I like my chocolate unadulterated. Particularly unadulterated with meat.
But thank you for your courage in going places I would not/could not.

  7. You find the most unusual things, Robyn! And I hate to say it out loud here but I may be one of the few people that isn't that big a fan of bacon. Or even chocolate. Am I weird? Wonderfully so :) And you know, I got my first taste of gelato two weeks ago. I didn't even know what it was before that. Honest :)

  8. I don't think I'm allowed to consume a drink that takes longer to say than to drink.

  9. It all sounds so wrong, and yet so right. That is an awesome discovery.

  10. That sounds really curious but some things really are, you are brave:))

  11. That sounds very strange...But also weirdly good...

  12. I'm not too big of a fan of bacon, but this sounds good. Have you had Milka chocolate before?

  13. You're funny, Birgit. Thanks.

Bobbybegood, I'm guessing they do. But they use kosher (fake) bacon. Smiles.

    EC, anytime, friend.

Martha, you did like the gelato. Right? Thanks for having the courage to admit your lack of enthusiasm for bacon or chocolate here. You're much healthier for it.

CW, I know. That name is way too long.

Sarah, I haven't tried Milka chocolate. Now I'll be on the lookout. Thank you, and thanks for visiting, which is thanks to your mom - one of my most loyal blog friends.

    Keep a smile, all.

  14. I like how you are the brave soul who will try a novelty item like this in an effort to share it with your readers. I would have scrunched my nose up and walked on by, but I think from now on I will be more inclined to give these kinds of things a try. For blogging material at least ;)

  15. Hmm I think it has one too many names for me to try haha

  16. Not for me sorry. Don't drink sodas anyway, but with all those flavours it sounds awful to me. I will take my chocolate as a candy bar etc. and my bacon as usual. I was going to say breakfast food but it is used for so much more.

  17. Canadians love chocolate, maple, and bacon. This could easily become our new national drink.

  18. Too many ingredients I don't eat, although I love the taste of maple.

  19. What is this decadent devilry? Maple bacon soda chocolate? 'Tis truly a concoction from the devil's jockstrap.

  20. Just the other day I had a chocolate covered maple smoked bacon donut, with real bacon on top. It was incredible. I don't think I would have wanted to wash that down with one of these sodas, though. If I've learned anything from bacon flavored foods and drink, it's that "flavored" is often the key word. The ingredients list always looks like something out of a chemistry lab, and oddly, 'bacon' is never actually listed as an ingredient. I'm looking at you, Baconnaise.

  21. The cream soda sounds great but the bacon makes me feel nauseous. I'm going to eat some fruit-and-nut chocolate to get the imagined bacon flavour out of my mouth.

  22. Hahaha… gosh, I'm not sure if either sound good, LOL! But if you give them a 7, then that's got to be delicious! :)

  23. Can't even imagine all those tastes together. Anything bacon-flavored is not my taste anyway ;-)

  24. I don't think I'd be too crazy about either, but of the two I'd try the taffy.

  25. I'm impressed that you have an "in" at a candy store! He could keep you covered in chocolates for the rest of your life. Hold the bacon, and hang on tight!

  26. Thanks for testing out that soda so we don't have to, Robyn. You're a brave soul. I do like cream but not with bacon. I've never tried bacon-maple-syrup flavored taffy, but I may just have to now!

  27. I feel like that should be a topping for one of Portland's famous Voodoo Donuts! Can you imagine the deliciousness?!?

  28. That's fun that he brought you the taffy.

I didn't know drinks or taffy came in such flavors. ;)

  29. I've heard of chocolate covered bacon, but this? Whew! That's taking it to a whole new level.

  30. I love your posts Robin! Also, mmm, bacon. That sounds divine. My favorite place for treats is Cops and Doughnuts Bakery in Clare, MI. They have a doughnut called The Bacon Squealer. It's an unfilled long john with maple frosting on top and two strips of bacon. It tastes just like pancakes and bacon and it's to die for.

  31. Wow, they tried to compile it all in one drink. I actually think I would try that, and the taffy. They both sound pretty good. Thanks for giving in and buying it. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not sure about either. For some reason, I fear the bacon infused flavors.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've heard a lot about the combination of bacon and chocolate. I'm not sure yet if I want to try it though ;)

  34. Interesting. Sounds like a lot of flavor per sip.

  35. OMG I feel ill. Well, you're a brave girl road testing all of these products for us mere mortals.

True to your word and your craft. What a star.

  36. Mmmm . . . bacon. Syrup. Add wine and chocolate and you got yourself the four main food groups, right there.

  37. Now I want bacon. Waaah.
    Happy Weekend!

  38. Hmm, I don't know. Neither one sounds like something I want to try, but I'll take your word for it that they are good. :-)

I'm glad you're there to do the taste-testing for us.

  39. My Granddaughter loves bacon. She would probably like the candy as well.
I just can't see me drinking anything bacon... chocolate YES!!

  40. After reading your post I may attempt a chocolate/bacon fudge to add to my Christmas fudge this year. :)

  41. I love taffy
    I love bacon
There is a Powell's a few minutes away. Yum!
Thanks for being the taste tester Robyn.

  42. I will find this, and I will drink this.

  43. Wow. I'm surprised buy your review. I was once given a gift of bacon-flavored chocolate. It was probably the worst fine chocolate I had ever had. Would never expect maple bacon taffy to be tasty! I LOVE cream soda, but chocolate-covered maple smoked bacon soda? Sorry, but I'll pass!
