The Latest in Chocolate: Chocolate Wines

Don't get the wrong idea about me. I still have chocolate wine in my fridge, left over from my birthday in June. Hm, I wonder if that's why it tastes like toxic vinegar now. (?) At any rate, I'm continuing the search for really good chocolate alcohol. Because if you're gonna mix the two, the product should be doubly divine.

Today, I'm reviewing two chocolate wines that a couple of friends helped sample.

1) Chocolate Shop's "chocolate lover's red wine". My summary: "Meh!" It's alright but not so good. I couldn't detect the chocolate, nor could I detect sweet red wine. It's a bit watered down and unmemorable. But it costs too much and is too pretty to NOT deliver. In other words, don't buy this one. I paid almost $15 for it. I give it a 4, and I'm being generous. My friends felt the same. One serving was plenty.

2) ChocoVine - a chocolate red wine made in Holland. Doesn't it look lovely and delicious? Yeah, I was fooled by this one too. I also paid a good chunk of change: nearly $12. We agreed it tastes just like Kahlua and cream. I love Kahlua and cream, but this one's marketed as a Dutch delicacy. No fair! I was disappointed yet again, but had no problems finishing that bottle. It does taste good, but it's not what it appears. I give this one a 6.

What about you? Ever had good chocolate wine? Open to the idea?

Cheers!

Happy Thursday and almost-weekend.

  1. I would imagine those are difficult tastes to combine well. Maybe just drinking wine while eating a box of chocolates would better?

  2. Mixing wine and chocolate just doesn't seem right to me. How about taste-testing some chocolate liqueurs? There must be some on the market.

  3. Chocolate wine? Now I can combine two bad habits.

  4. I've had a chocolate liqueur which was very rich, and more for sipping. The chocolate taste was like a truffle.

I can't remember the name, but it was a liqueur, not a wine, hence it was sweeter. The liqueur went will with coffee, too.

  5. I didn't even know they made chocolate wine. Sounds like a tricky combination for a drink, though I've seen websites that try to pair the right dessert wine with chocolate candy.

  6. Never had chocolate wine before. Both sound rather meh.

  7. I love Kahlua and cream, maybe I should try that wine!

  8. OMG, you got me drooling so hard it's not pretty :)

  9. If it tasted like chocolate and could raise my "spirits" I'd give it a go! Heck, I might even become a happy drunk!

  10. I almost never drink anything alcoholic so I'll just wait around until I see you post "I've found a chocolate wine that is so incredibly delicious you have to taste it." In the meantime if anyone asks me what I think about chocolate wine I'll say, "I know someone who has been searching every which away and says she's gonna find it." Actually I was alluding to a song there from about 1960 but can't remember who sang it or the title. If you find the wine, I'll find the song.

  11. Oh, Robyn...I am at a loss as I can't drink anything with alcohol but I am sure your ratings are spot on. If I would ever be able to drink...I think I would go after Kahlua and cream. I love the smell of it.
Hope you are having a great day.

  12. I like the Choco-vine. Of course, I used to buy it in de islands where liquor is 'duty free' (it only cost abut $6 a bottle). Maybe that had something to do with how much I liked it. I did have a chocolate martini last week for the first time and that was sooooooooooooo GOOD.

  13. Isn't it better to just eat chocolate while sipping a good wine? I can't imagine a grape taste going well with chocolate. I'm open to the idea, but I don't foresee one of these tasting great.

  14. I love a good red wine with chocolate. How about Godiva liquor? That stuff is simply divine!!!

  15. I never really thought that chocolate wine existed especially if it's not a liquor so I'm not too surprised that this let you down, part of me was expecting it to be poor. I think Alex is right, I guess just drinking wine while eating luxury chocolates would go down better!

  16. I've had wines with "chocolate" overtones (like woody tones or something-- I'm not that refined to detect). I think I'll stick with chocolate AND wine or as someone suggested, Godiva, or a chocolate martini. Mmmm

  17. I've realized that I just can't access you through my Bloglovin. It will pull up your site, but not your comment box. Argh. Have to just use your url.

Chocolate wines. I once got on this B52 kick...drank them all the time. Of course I was rich and could afford the Grand Marnier. Now I just eat a Hershey's Special Dark with a whiskey chaser.

If I come across a good one, I'll let you know.

  18. Chocolate wine? That can't be right - wines are supposed to be fruity! Liqueur-flavoured chocolates taste good, so why not chocolate-flavoured liqueurs?

  19. I don't fancy the taste of wine but I do love pom-cran juice and often drink it in a wine glass.

Even right now, I've got supper started and water in a wine glass.

    Love the glasses.

  23. Where did those photos go? No, not this time. I shall try to remember what the photos looked like.

    If I drank, I might consider choco-wine.

Happy Friday at almost two in the morning. Time zones!

    Take care of YOU, Robyn.

  25. I've never tried chocolate wine. I'm not sure that would work. But a glass of wine in one hand...and some chocolate in the other...well, that would work just fine :)

  26. never heard of chocolate wine

Have a great Friday and weekend. xo

  28. I don't think I've ever seen chocolate wine. I'd think the chocolate flavor would have to be stronger than the wine flavor to work.

  29. Chocolate wine?
    You may be interested....
I brought the heir to the Penwasser fortune back to college last weekend. Since he's now 21, we were able to both go into a micro-brewery. We selected a pitcher of what's called "Maroon Effect."
It was a dark ale with caramel and CHOCOLATE added.
    OMG.
I expected an alcoholic Hershey syrup, but no, it was absolutely delicious. Since I knew chocolate was an ingredient, I could detect it, but it was not overpowering and was fantastic.
Looking forward to picking him up in May.

  30. Victoria, darling, REALLY? GET HELP NOW!

    Al P, that sounds fabulous.

JustKeepingItReal, I haven't tried Godiva liquor, but it sounds divine.

HappyWhisk, wine glasses make everything taste better.

Yes to all of you who suggest some good chocolate with a glass of wine. That's the safest way. I do know of a brand of chocolate port, Danielle, that's heavenly. But it's not local...want to find something around here.

    Happy Friday.

  31. PS Dearest Victoria, I just posted this at your site. It's awaiting moderation. In the event that it's not published, it follows:

Kindly do not visit my blog again to advertise the 50 Shades movie, UNLESS you will offer me a cut of the profits. I’ve spent four years developing a blog of fun and meaningful writing. My mock E L James interview was a highlight, too. Neither me nor any of my over 600 followers are fans. Your comments on my blog will only further repel people from the 50 Shades craze. It looks very, very desperate.

    Thank you.
    Best wishes.

  32. I can only imagine how hard of a balance that would be to find. I'm glad it's not my job!!

  33. I don't drink wine, but I buy a bottle every New Year's Eve and my hubby ends up drinking it all after I take a few sips and declare wine tastes like shit. It's the same thing year after year and I never learn. I am just not a wine drinker.

Just give me some liquid chocolate in a wine glass and I'll call it a day from here on out :)

  35. Those are nice options, but I'd rather have a frozen mocha latte or a chocolate shake.
